Imagine #libraries don't exist, but there's this person who thought of them and is trying to convince everyone else about them.

-Borrow books for free? People are going to steal them!
-You can just come in to use a computer? Well that's just going to be abused by freeloaders.
-Staff? Who is going to pay them? Why should my taxes be wasted subsidising access to books for people who haven't saved and bought their own?

How many amazing things do we dismiss? What is our society missing out on?

""The solution isn't to push users back to the command line. The solution must be to bring composability to the graphical environment."" -- @ajroach42

I wanna talk about this for a bit because I think it's an important piece of the UI puzzle that we just somehow haven't ever yet realised is a thing we need.

1) Text is a thing that we can a) edit and b) copy/paste

2) GUI constructs, on the other hand, generally we just... can't. They're like hot-glued to the screen.

3) but what if we could?

i read a thing recently that blew my mind a little.
went something like:

people can imagine time travel to the past and one little act making massive differences in the timeline

but in their present they think even the greatest effort they can put in will not make any difference to the future

Little headsup, Mastodon developers seem to be testing a language selector in the posting interface (see attached image).

The idea is you set the language you're posting in which will make it easier for other people to filter your post out if they don't speak it.

You can already set your default language in the Preferences/Settings section, but the idea of this new feature is to let you optionally change the setting for each particular message. This is handy if you toot in several languages.

I have no idea if/when this will be rolled out, the developers' instances often get test features like this.

“…ever doomed to repeat this again, and again, and again, and again, and again!”

This perfectly describes my current gastric distress.

As a #Linux user, I have stopped using other OSes for a while now, but that's no reason to not give them a shot, so here it is: a review of macOS by a Linux fanboy

And the winner is… Ukraine!

Congratulations to the Kalush Orchestra for their emotive winning song ‘Stefania’, which captured the hearts of Europeans tonight.

Europe stands with you tonight and always.

Alea Iacta Est — wasn't that from Memoria Miseria (Extreme)?

Varis unleashes four consecutive 180-degree cone attacks in the direction he is facing, followed by one final (delayed) attack directly behind himself.

What's that gotta do with ?

What 's song's lyrics are “I hope! I hope!” What I understand:
aho! aho! 阿呆! 阿呆! (translated: simpleton!)
